Scoil Chroí Íosa, known locally as the Pres, continues a tradition of education which the Presentation Sisters began in 1815. Our school welcomes all to a happy, safe and supportive learning environment, inspired by Christian values in the Presentation tradition, where all feel equal, respected and valued.
We place a huge emphasis on the creative arts, active learning and bringing local and national expertise into the classroom.
As you browse through our website I hope you get a sense of how actively engaged the children are in learning through the arts, gardening, woodwork, music, physical activity, mindfulness, play and art therapy, yoga, cookery and much more. We have created partnerships with many local and national organisations to ensure the children are exposed to a wide variety of stimuli and experiences. We continue to transform the physical environment of the school to stimulate creative thinking, from our wonderful library to our glorious garden!
HERE'S WHAT THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION INSPECTORS HAD TO SAY ABOUT OUR SCHOOL AND WELLBEING WHEN THEY VISITED IN 2018:
"The overall quality of support for pupils’ well-being is very good. A caring and inclusive atmosphere exists and pupils’ holistic development is catered for very effectively. Pupil voice is fostered very effectively through initiatives such as the Student Council, which has positively influenced decisions to improve pupil well-being. The role of the HSCL teacher is carried out to a high standard. A broad range of initiatives to support the link between the school and the community and to include parents are in place. A very good range of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities are provided for pupils to develop a wide range of skills and talents, many of them voluntarily by the teachers and other stakeholders.''
We have been working hard using the Department of Education, HSA and HPSC guidelines to prepare our school and staff for reopening safely. Please see our Covid-19 policy statement below, ratified by the Board of Management
With parents, staff and children all working together and following the guidelines we can make Scoil Chroí Íosa a safe place for everybody to learn and enjoy. Please see below our school Covid-19 Response Plan which outlines in detail how we will be managing infection control and what your role is in the process
A summary of the main changes are as follows:
school doors will open at 8.30am as normal but class time will now begin at 8.40am for all classes. Therefore school will finish at 1.20pm for infants and 2.20pm for 1st-6th classes
we will be using 3 entrances and exits to maximise social distancing and separation of class bubbles. Each class will be a bubble and within each bubble the children will be grouped in small pods of 4-6 pupils.
Children and parents should not be on the school grounds before 8.30am. When congregating at 8.30am outside, social distancing of 2m should be observed at all times using the ground markings. At 8.30am the doors will open and members of staff will invite the children in one by one, sanitise their hands and guide them straight to their classroom. Their teacher will be in the class ready to start work at 8.40am. Parents will not be permitted to enter the school building.
Junior and senior infants will enter via the BLUE entrance which is the front door near Mr Barry's office. The ground outside from the school gate is marked with blue smiley faces which should be used for social distancing
1st class Ms O'Donnell, 6th class Ms O'Reilly and 4th/5th class Ms Cawley/Ms Sharkey will enter via the YELLOW entrance which is the yard door. The ground is marked with yellow markers to help with social distancing. Children should line up on those markers from 8.30am and will be invited into the school one by one to sanitise their hands and go straight to class
2nd class Ms Doherty and 3rd/4th class Ms Healy will enter via the GREEN entrance which is the back door near the canal. From 8.30am children can line up using the green ground markings and enter the school one by one, get their hands sanitised and go straight to class.
All classes will also exit the school at home time via the same door by which they entered. Parents will not be permitted into the building so must use the ground markings outside to wait for the teacher to bring the children to the exit door. So junior and senior infants can be collected at the blue entrance at 1.20pm. 1st, 6th and 4th/5th can be collected at the yellow entrance at 2.20pm and 2nd and 3rd/4th can be collected at the green entrance at 2.20pm. Children making their own way home (walking/cycling/bus) will exit via their designated class exit and must quickly leave the school grounds. Children and parents are not permitted to mix or congregate on school grounds before or after school.
Those children staying for Happy Hour 1.20-2.20pm will be collected from their class by Pauline and brought to the Preschool room. They can be collected from the Blue entrance at 2.20pm. Those staying for Afterschool until 5pm will be collected from their classroom by Afterschool staff. They will operate in 3 separate groups using rooms 1, 2 and 3 downstairs. Again parents are not permitted in to the building to collect. The children may be collected at the Yellow entrance (yard door) up to 5pm. Parents should ring the bell or knock on the window of room 1/2/3 to notify staff if they are collecting their child before 5pm and a staff member will bring the child out to you.
Children should not bring items from home into school apart from clothing eg coat, hat etc and lunch. Children's books and copies will remain in school so children should have a spare pencil case and copies (1 writing/1 maths) at home
the water dispensers in the senior classes will not be available so please ensure your child has adequate drinks. Their reusable bottle should be clearly marked with their name
Children's pencils/colours etc may not be shared in school so please ensure they are marked with the child's name
The school's code of behavior has been updated to reflect Covid-19 guidelines. Please note that failure/refusal to co-operate with covid guidelines is serious misbehaviour and repeated refusal/failure to comply is gross misbehaviour. Also any threatening/spitting/deliberate coughing at another person will be treated as gross misbehaviour.
All parents must ensure the school has up to date contact details including phone, email, address and emergency contacts also.
Jr infants finish at 11.30am for the first 7 school days. All other classes finish at 12 o'clock on Thurs 27th and Fri 28th. Normal finish times from Monday 31st- Senior infants 1.20pm, 1st to 6th 2.20pm.
Children who should not attend school:
Children who have travelled from countries not on the Green List should not attend school during the 14-day self-isolation period

If your child is in one of the following categories, they should not attend school –
Children who have been diagnosed with Covid-19
Children who have been in close contact with a person who has been diagnosed with Covid-19
Children who have a suspected case of Covid-19 and the outcome of the test is pending
Children who have been in contact with a person who has a suspected case of Covid-19 and the outcome of the test is pending
Children with underlying health conditions who have been directed by a medical professional not to attend school
Children who have returned home after travelling abroad and must self-isolate for a period of 14 days
Children who are generally unwell
Please contact the school directly if your child has underlying health conditions and has been directed by a medical professional not to attend school.

MOVE WELL, MOVE OFTEN!
THIS YEAR WE HAVE FOCUSED STRONGLY ON FUNDAMENTAL MOVEMENTS IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION. RECENT STUDIES BY UCC AND UCD SHOWED THAT PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN IN IRELAND ARE STRUGGLING TO MASTER FUNDAMENTAL MOVEMENTS SO THE PROGRAMME 'MOVE WELL, MOVE OFTEN' HAS BEEN LAUNCHED. TWO MEMBERS OF STAFF HAVE ATTENDED THE TRAINING AND WE ARE IMPLEMENTING IT THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE SCHOOL! WE ARE REALLY NOTICING AN IMPROVEMENT IN THE PHYSICAL LITERACY OF THE CHILDREN. MORE AND MORE OF OUR PUPILS ARE NOW MEMBERS OF SPORTING CLUBS OUTSIDE SCHOOL AND WE ARE HAVING A LOT MORE SUCCESS IN HANDBALL AND SOCCER TOURNAMENTS AGAINST OTHER SCHOOLS.
A BIG THANKYOU TO OUR NEAR NEIGHBOURS IN NUIG FOR INVITING US TO TAKE PART IN THE HEALTHY HEROES DAY. 2ND-4TH ALL ENJOYED DANCE, RESEARCH, GROUPWORK, DISCOVERY LEARNING AND MUCH MORE. AS PART OF SCIENCEWEEK THE KIDS HAVE LEARNED ALL ABOUT THE HUMAN BODY AND HOW TO STAY HEALTHY AND ACTIVE! 2ND AND 3RD CLASS GOT THEIR IPADS OUT TO RESEARCH THE BIG QUESTION...'WHY DO WE NEED FOOD?' COLLABORATIVE AND CREATIVE THINKING AT IT'S BEST!
MUSIC IN THE AIR!!
THIS YEAR WE WILL BE CONTINUING OUR FANTASTIC MUSIC PROGRAMME. ALL CLASSES FROM INFANTS UP TO 3RD WILL BE DOING COLOURSTRINGS LESSONS AND ALL CHILDREN FROM 2RD-6TH WILL BE LEARNING A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT. THE SCHOOL CHOIR AND BAND WILL BE PLANNING AHEAD FOR THE CHRISTMAS CONCERT. THE INSTRUMENTS WE ARE LEARNING ARE RECORDER, GUITAR, VIOLIN, DRUMS AND KEYBOARD. WE REALLY ARE THE SCHOOL OF ROCK!!!!!!!!!! THE CHOIR PERFORMED IN NUIG ON THE 26TH JAN FOR THE PEACE PROMS CONCERT. WHAT A FANTASTIC NIGHT'S ENTERTAINMENT IT WAS!

If you go down to the woods today...........you'll probably meet our 1ST CLASS! They have been doing forest school activities each Friday with the help of Esti and Ms O'Donnell. They have had tremendous fun while learning about nature, taking risks, teamwork and co-operation, language development, motor skill development and much more. There will be six trips in total and everybody is really enjoying it.
OUR SCHOOL GARDEN IS A WONDERFUL PLACE. WE LEARN TO GROW FRUIT, VEGETABLES AND FLOWERS. WE SOMETIMES DO OUR LESSONS OUTSIDE IN OUR OUTDOOR CLASSROOM. THE GARDEN NEEDS LOTS OF VOLUNTEERS TO HELP WITH KEEPING EVERYTHING GROWING WELL SO IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN HELPING OUT LET US KNOW. PARENTS VOLUNTEER IN THE GARDEN ON WEDNESDAY MORNINGS
WE ARE ALL ABOUT CREATIVITY IN SCOIL CHROÍ ÍOSA. WE ARE DELIGHTED TO ANNOUNCE THAT WE HAVE BEEN CHOSEN TO PILOT THE CREATIVE SCHOOLS INITIATIVE FOR THE DEPT OF EDUCATION. WE WERE ASSIGNED A CREATIVE ASSOCIATE, MIRIAM CUDDY WHO SAT DOWN WITH OUR PLANNING TEAM TO DEVISE A PLAN FOR DEVELOPING CREATIVE IDEAS AND OPPORTUNITIES IN LEARNING FOR OUR PUPILS. WE ALREADY HAVE A FANTASTIC REPUTATION FOR FOSTERING CREATIVITY, ESPECIALLY THROUGH THE ARTS SO THIS GIVES US THE OPPORTUNITY TO FURTHER DEVELOP ON THE GREAT WORK ALREADY DONE. WE HAVE FORGED SOME VALUABLE PARTNERSHIPS IN RECENT YEARS IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITY AND SOME EXCITING PROJECTS UPCOMING FOR OUR KIDS ARE:

SOME OF OUR HOTSHOT PUPILS ARE DOING SO WELL WE HAVE DECIDED TO SEND THEM OFF TO UNIVERSITY!!!! This year with Covid-19 restrictions in place the Academy is going online. Mr Byrne is assessing interest from students and parents and we hope to have some pupils up and running this term.
LET'S GET ACTIVE
THIS YEAR WE'LL BE CONCENTRATING ON SOCCER, OLYMPIC HANDBALL AND MORE. EMPHASIS WILL BE ON PARTICIPATION AND FUN. WE ARE ENTERED IN THE FAI FUTSAL COMPETITION, THE FAI 5 A SIDES AND THE OLYMPIC HANDBALL INTERSCHOOL COMPETITION. WE HOPE THAT EVERYONE CONTINUES TO STAY HEALTHY AND ACTIVE IN SCOIL CHROÍ ÍOSA THIS YEAR.
OUR STAFF HAVE RECEIVED TRAINING IN THE INCREDIBLE YEARS PROGRAMME. THIS IS AN EVIDENCE BASED BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME ENDORSED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AND THE NATIONAL EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICE NEPS. THE PROGRAMME FOCUSES ON REINFORCEMENT OF POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR AND CREATING A POSITIVE HAPPY ENVIRONMENT IN THE SCHOOL. WE ARE HAVING GREAT SUCCESS TO DATE AND THE CHILDREN ARE ENJOYING ALL OF THE PRAISE AND REWARDS FOR THEIR GOOD BEHAVIOUR. AT THE MOMENT WE ARE REALLY EMPHASISING THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD MANNERS, RESPECT AND PUNCTUALITY. WELL DONE TO EVERYBODY.
We provide afterschool to pupils of Scoil Chroí Íosa from jr infants up to 6th class. Our experienced staff help the children with their homework and do various activities also. The children are also free to join in the many afterschool clubs such as music club, sports, drama, dance club and more. We also have many volunteers from NUIG who help out on a regular basis.The Afterschool is a paid service but discounts are available through the National Childcare Scheme.
